Sidney Gross

American 1921-1969
oil on canvas
1953
These are examples of Sidney Gross' first excursion into the fully abstract. The critics spoke highly of these works. Stuart Preston in the New York Times wrote: "All is calm, all is dusky in Signey Gross' discret, mysterious and beautifully painted abstracts … as little susceptible of exact interpretations as cloud forms or the face of the moon … the pictures are gratifying to the eye … a slowly moving kaleidoscope of autumnal moods." In other reviews, this one man show was praised for Gross'  "luminous colors … of unusual refinement … emotional … feverish … banked like fires."

The nest to the last one is from the Elaine Gross personal estate. In the group of paintings (most went to Art Students League) and sketches (most went to the Smithsonian) she kept a painting of Mary & Joseph & Christ child and donkey and this amorphic abstract which seems to include Biblical iconography. The last one has been restored, cleaned, and the original frame has been glazed.

A 28 page monograph on Gross with over 50 full color reproductions is available for $10 postage included. We are working on a fuller biography, click here to see it.
