Balcomb Greene

USA 1904-1990
Oil 20x16+frame

We are confident that this painting is by either Balcomb or Gertrude Greene., and in either case is priced below auction. Shortly after purchasing this many years ago and considering its style rwe accepted the attribution of Balcombe, later we found a very similar one on AskArt possibly misattribued to his wife Gertrude Glass Greene (since removed). There is obvious confusion both ways in the auction records as a current search revealed.

Greens’s abstract-cubistic style was influenced by Juan Gris, Mondrian Picasso and Matisse.   His semi-abstracted compositions with emphasis on angular planes and muted tones are signature works.  His first one-person exhibition in New York  in 1947.  The following year, he bought property and began building his home and studio on the cliffs of Montauk. Starting in 1950, Bertha Shaeffer Gallery held solos  annually through 1961.  He was one of 23 artists included in The Museum of Modern Art’s important "New Images of Man" exhibition.
